Work can be better.

delight or any experience that reveals the human spirit.”

Healthy living requires a balance between work and play. This is
sometimes described as a balance between mastery and pleasure.
Pleasure is easy to recognize. We usually know if we're having fun.
Mastery is simply that feeling of satisfaction with a job well done. The joy
of learning to ride a bicycle or drive a car? That's mastery.
Most of us work with other people. Those relationships can
contribute to the amount of pleasure and mastery we experience -- or
don't experience -- when working or in school. When those relationships
are stressed, that stress can spill over into our personal lives. Are
anger, frustration, or disappointment coloring your life?
Thanks to modern technology, it's now harder to leave work at work.
Homework, both the adult and the kid kind, can be a major source of
stress and conflict for families.
Add in the concerns about the future, the economy, job security,
cutbacks and increased workloads and you have the recipe for burnout.
People under stress don't always behave well, so add in conflicts with
colleagues, classmates, a teacher or a boss. It's not a good mix.
How well do you manage your stress? Are you treating yourself
right or are you using temporary fixes like fast food or alcohol to feel
better?
Are you drawing the line and giving yourself down-time to recharge
your batteries or is the drive to be perfect setting you up for a fall?
Are you letting go of disappointments or holding on to resentments?
The ability to bounce back, to be resilient, can be the difference between
success and disaster. The good news is, these skills can be improved.
The bad news is, most of us aren't taught how to do this in school
and have to learn the hard way. I often tell adolescent clients that
sometimes what they are learning in a tough class isn't really the subject
matter, but how to get along with a tough boss or do a job under tough
conditions.
If you or someone you love has a tough job and the stress is
showing, please give us a call. Life can be better.
